Virtual Researcher On Call

The initial start-up funding for VROC was provided by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities in 2006.  Funds were allocated to be used for Ontario-based schools at no cost to the schools.  From 2006 to 2009 school boards across Ontario participated in the core VROC program through videoconferencing sessions between researchers and students.  Also in 2009, VROC introduced a mechanism for schools in and outside of Ontario to participate in VROC even if they did not have high-end videoconferencing equipment in the classroom. This program enhancement essentially allowed any school in Canada to opt-in to the VROC program provided they had adequate bandwidth, a good computer with a webcam and audio solution (known as desktop conferencing)and enthusiasm to try something new in the classroom.

As a result, the academic year 2009/10 involved schools participating from Alberta and Quebec and included many school participating using desktop conferencing methods.  A mentoring pilot study was offered to six school boards in Ontario in the first half of 2010  in partnership with Smarter Science.  This mentorship pilot study was the precursor to the new VROC program being offered this fall, Mentor Me.

The academic year 2010/11 will be a very busy year as VROC introduces three new programs for schools across Canada and enhancements to its core program: Reaching Every Student. The new programs have three levels of participation with the first level being absolutely free and including most of the core components.  The next two levels offer a buy-in component within a cost-recovery model.  More information on VROC's programs can be found under the Programs menu.

Through these new initiatives participation in VROC essentially creates an environment for all students in Canada to have equal opportunities to enhance their educational experience.
